Good prices on carcass competition

An Ile de France carcass of 22.3kg earned more than R31 000 at Landbouweekblad’s Royal show carcass competition.

The annual carcass competition at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg again caused great excitement when the winning carcass was auctioned for R1350 per kilogram. Landbouweekblad is a sponsor of the competition.

The winning carcass of Ms. Regina Harmse from the RCH Ile de France stud near Ermelo achieved a score of 99.37% according to the Samic assessment.

The biggest buyers of the evening, the Oysterbox restaurant in Durban, which among other things bought the winning carcass for R31 455, were responsible for more than half of the evening’s turnover of a rap more than R235 000.

The head chef of the Oysterbox, Mr. Kevin Joseph and Mr. Wayne Coetzer, general manager of the Oysterbox hotel, stopped short of bidding for the winning carcass.

“We consider ourselves the top restaurant in the country and that’s why we look for the top carcasses in the country,” Joseph said after the auction.

The best beef carcass at the show was a Bonsmara from the Mtubatuba Mini Farms and was auctioned for R70/kg at the Oysterbox. The winning pig carcass was of PIC genetics and bred by Mr. Gerd Baum from the Joseph Baynes Estate and was also bought by the Oysterbox at R30/kg.
